Hello hello ~ the weather is finally getting warmer which means it’s time for more lightweight dresses!  Maxi dresses continue to be a hot trend this season and I’m a fan of the casually elegant look they create.

For those of you who follow me on Instagram (@travelsizechic), I was just in Hawaii recently.  I bought the pictured floral maxi dress because I wanted to dress, or at least attempt to, more Hawaiian 😛

Travel Diary – Singapore

Marina Bay Sands Hotel

I visited Singapore towards the end of last year for a friend’s wedding and finally got around to posting about my trip.  Singapore is known for its melting-pot culture, convenience, cleanliness, and delicious food.  People usually plan this as a stop of their trip to Asia since it’s ex-pat friendly and a small enough country where you can probably see most of it in 2-3 days.  I was there for 3 days and 3 nights and felt like I had seen and eaten a lot 🙂

How to Look more Mature vs. Youthful (Part II: Youthful Look)

As a continuation to of my dual-post on how to look more mature vs. youthful, here is the second part on how to appear more youthful (you can see the first part on how to look more mature here).

Right: Mature look from previous post / Left: youthful look on which this post is based

*Youthful Look*

Youthful usually means lighthearted, carefree, free-spirited, or a bit of la-vie-boheme.  There are days when you just want to feel more youthful because you’ve had a long week and feel weighed down by the stress…we’ve all been there. So here are some tips to create this look…

How to Look More Mature vs. Youthful (Part I: Mature Look)

Some friends have asked me about how to use makeup to make themselves look more mature. When I curiously asked why, they shared a similar answer – for professional reasons.  Sometimes when you’re dealing with more senior folks at work, whether executives or clients, appearing more mature will win you instant credibility.  As told by a former supervisor, in the busy work environment where people don’t have an extra minute to spare, perception is reality.  On the flip side, there are times when you just want to appear/feel more youthful and carefree.

This question has inspired my dual-series about how to appear more mature vs. youthful.  Please note that appearing “mature” or “youthful” have little to do with age, but more with the impression you give and how you feel inside.

*Mature Look*

Left: bareface / Right: wearing makeup to create a more mature look

Do not confuse the word “mature” with “old”, you can be mature even at a younger age.  A “mature” look is typically more formal, polished, and appearing as if you mean business 😉 Now let’s get started…

Beauty Products Expiration Date 101

Hello hello ~ sorry I took a longer than expected hiatus from the blog, I’m back!  Blogging is a bit like dieting, it takes determination and persistence to maintain a blog while juggling a full-time job…so I applaud those who are doing the same b/c I haven’t been very good at keeping up with mine 😛 Anyway, one of my new year’s resolutions is to post more frequently and consistently so here we go.

A topic that many people have asked me about is the expiration date of beauty products.  Whenever I see my mom or friends hoard makeup from many years ago because they “haven’t gone through them yet”, I URGE them to throw those away.  Just like food, beauty products do go bad; this category includes makeup, fragrance, nail-care, skincare, and haircare products.  The last thing you want is to wear expired products that give you a rash (speaking from experience).

Unlike food though, the expiration date of beauty products isn’t always clearly labeled or the shelf life isn’t exactly public knowledge.  Having worked in the beauty industry and spoken with industry insiders, I’d like to share some general rules around expiration date of beauty products and how to best preserve them:

  1. Unopened cosmetic products generally have shelf lives of 3 years, IF you get them from a legitimate source. By legitimate I mean, department stores (e.g. Nordstrom), Sephora, Ulta, or the company’s website. If you get them from a secondary channel (i.e. eBay), then this rule doesn’t apply.

Denim on Denim with Summer Accents

FullSizeRender (41).jpg

F21 Denim Sleeveless Tie-Front Top (similar here and here), H&M Demin A-Line Skirt  (size 2), Tory Burch Block-T Leather Bucket Tote Bag in Vachetta, UO Festival Round Sunglasses in orange, Vince Camuto ‘Kade’ Cutout Loafers (size 5), Rocksbox accessories

Denim on denim always creates a nonchalant yet chic look, no matter what season.  I posted a denim outfit last autumn (see post here)  and I’ve replicated the same idea for the summer with different denim pieces that are more appropriate for the hotter weather.

When it comes to denim, there is something about wearing different shades of it that adds an element of sophistication to the outfit, so I paired a light-wash denim top with a medium-wash denim skirt as opposed to being monochromatic.  Choose a top that’s made of thin denim fabric.  Mine’s an old one from F21 and I’ve linked a couple of good options here and here.  The tie front of the shirt is a nice touch and it’s always been a favored look with summer tops.  The A-line denim skirt is a foolproof figure-flattering piece for petites as it creates the look of a smaller waistline.  The button down style of the skirt is also a popular trend this summer.

6-Step Skincare Routine: Summer Edition

Going au naturel – no foundation or face makeup here, just filled in my non-existent brows

Summertime calls for a change not only in your wardrobe, but also skincare routine.  It’s natural for your skin to produce more oil in the summer in response to hotter and more humid climate.  I definitely noticed that my normally super-dry skin becomes oilier, especially in the T-zone in the summer.

I posted about my 6-step skincare routine in this past post.  Today, I’m sharing an updated version of my 6-step routine addressing common summer skincare concerns and incorporating some new products that have hit the market.  The common thread of products that I use in the summer is that they’re lightweight yet still hydrating.  Now, let’s begin…

Products I’ve been using this summer

Step 1: Makeup Removal

Eau Fraîche Douceur

I was using an oil-based makeup remover before but switched to a lighter cleansing water for the summer.  I’ve been using Lancome’s Eau Fraiche Douceur cleansing water and found it quite effective.  It leaves your skin feeling refreshed and supple, and did I mention that cleansing water is trending right now?
